The difference is not margin. A Saturday in peak season costs more than a Thursday in February — the same DJ, the same hours. December corporate dates and May–October Saturdays are the first to go, and they carry the least negotiating room.
Most quotes assume four to five hours of performance. Ceremony coverage, an extended cocktail hour, or an after-party each add real time — and setup and breakdown are typically two to three hours on top of the hours you actually see.
One room needs one system. A ceremony outside, cocktails on a terrace, and dinner indoors is three zones, which means more speakers, more wiring, and often a second setup entirely.
Manhattan load-ins with no freight elevator, permit parking, or union venue rules cost more than a suburban ballroom with a loading dock. Distance matters less than access.

Agencies add a margin on top of the performer fee, so the same DJ booked directly is often less expensive. The larger difference is not price but certainty: agencies typically reserve the right to substitute performers, so the DJ you auditioned may not be the DJ who arrives.
